What Heritage Clients Need to Know About
Their Domain Name

If you purchased your domain name from a registrar other than Heritage "HIT", please disregard this notice.

If you purchased your domain name from Heritage, "HIT", please read below for VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

It has come to our attention that if you registered your domain name with Heritage, there is a good chance that you MAY NOT be listed as a contact person for your domain name registration and renewal.

When you signed on with HIT, you purchased a registration for your domain name and web hosting for your website. Since I was not an employee of HIT, I do not know the time interval that you may have paid for. Whatever amount of time is, your domain name and web hosting will have to be renewed at some point in time. For you to continue using your domain name you will have to be notified of its renewal date or it will expire.

Why is this important?
In order for you to know when your domain name is up for renewal you must be listed as the contact person for your domain name. Because HIT registered your domain name in their name, your contact was omitted and therefore you will not receive the notice. This means your domain will expire and shortly after it does your website may go down and you will no longer own that name. Secondly, being a contact allows you to also make changes to the name server entries if you decide you want to move your web site and email to another hosting company.

What Can You Do? First thing to do is check the registered information on record about your domain name by clicking this link www.whois.net. On their main page enter your domain name into the first block labeled "WHOIS Lookup" and then toggle the dropdown for your suffix, i.e., .com, .net, .whatever your domain name is and click "GO".

If you DO NOT see your name, email and phone number listed in any of the contact information fields: Registrant Contact; Administrative Contact; Technical Contact, you should be concerned. You will also notice one of the last entries titled "Name Servers or Domain Servers". These are the servers your actual website resides on. You will probably see an entry like this:

   ns0.heritagedns.com
   ns1.heritagedns.com
   ns2.heritagedns.com
   ns3.heritagedns.com

The name servers listed above are now FIBERNET Name Servers and they are where your current website resides. If the Name Servers are NOT the same as those listed above, then your web site may no longer be with FIBERNET.

How to get your name listed as a point of contact?

I have called FIBERNET about this issue and was told by their tech support staff that they can assist users with this issue for a fee of $25. This is a small price to pay to know that you are the point of contact for your domain name.
