Help for HIT Web Design Clients

dvmark.com  Article Written By :Robert Schonhoff

My name is Robert Schonhoff and I am the owner of Digital Vision Marketing. 3 years ago, to generate additional income during this poor economy, I outsourced my design skills in logo, web site and flash banner design to HIT Web Design clients. I was not an employee of HIT and as such was unable to effect better customer service. In my own small way I tried however I could to get the answers you needed but were unable to get directly from HIT.

I have been contacting clients that I did some projects for, like you, to inform them of the news that on March 8th , 2011 HIT Web Design or Heritage Internet Technologies, decided to cease doing business and closed its doors. Like you, I too remain unpaid for several months of services rendered. I regret the way Heritage (HIT) handled many of my accounts and want to offer whatever assistance I can during this transition.

During the past 5 months Digital Vision has had an amazingly positive response by Hit Clients as we have assisted in transitioning them to web hosting, design, modifications, domain name issues and other issues regarding salvaging their investment. If you are one of the lucky few that have successfully migrated to a more stable hosting and design company we wish you the best of luck. We are here if you need us. If you are still thinking your website is with Hit, please read on.

The closing of Heritage has left a lot of unsatisfied clients with unanswered questions about what to do next. “Can I get my money back?”, What happened to my unfinished projects?” and “Where is my website now?” are the most common questions I have been getting. I have written this document to answer some of the most common concerns that clients have been asking.

What happened to my website?

Even before Heritage went out of business, in all likelihood your website was probably hosted on a fiber.net server. Your account date, domain name and website are now with fiber.net. Heritage is no longer associated with your account. If you have a live site it has been transferred to Fibernet. As for right now you are OK and everything should be functioning as expected. Over the next few weeks Fibernet will be contacting you about the transition and to help you decide if you would like to continue hosting your website with Fibernet or if you wish move you website to another provider. Contact Fibernet at 800-305-6995.

The following steps are necessary for you to consider if you want to make changes or additions to your web site or moving your website away from Fiber.Net

Step 1 - How Do I Make Changes to My Website?

This is the single most important step you need to accomplish. Before you can make edits to your website you need to know what your login and password is and your FTP address. Without this information you will need to contact Fibernet.

When you were with Heritage they provided you with a username and password to login to your control panel. This login information is what your designer will also use to make web site changes. Access your control panel is usually www.yourdomainname.com/cpanel. Ask your designer to test for connectivity using the login credentials you were given by Heritage. If they are unable to connect, you will need to contact Fibernet at 800-305-6995 to get updated login credentials that will allow your designer to connect.

If your designer is successful in connecting to your Fibernet Hosted website then at this stage you can proceed with making the changes you need to your web pages. It is important to understand, that at this point, if your designer is able to make changes to your website, and your clients see the updated content on your website, it is NOT NECESSARY to proceed with Steps 2 & 3, unless you feel it’s necessary.

IMPORTANT NOTE: CHOSING A DESIGNER VS YOUR HOSTING COMPANY

If you are going to want to transfer your website to another hosting company talk to your designer first. All designers have a preference as to whether they prefer a Linux or Microsoft development platform. To you and your users the visual effect of how your website behaves and looks, will be displayed the same no matter what platform they are hosted on. Once you know your designers platform preference, find a web hosting company that supports it. Most designers already have a recommended hosting company, so you can start there first.

Step 2 - How Can I move my website to another provider?

DO NOT do this step until you have successfully completed Step 1. If you were successful in completing Step 1 and your designer is able to connect to your website and make changes, you are ready to proceed with this Step.

Don’t choose your new hosting company until you have chosen a designer. Each designer has a platform preference, Linux or Microsoft, so it is important to find a hosting company that supports their preference.

The hosting company you chose will setup the required environment so that your new designer can move your website from Fibernet. Once your new hosting plan is ready to use, give your designer the login information to connect to your new control panel. Once your designer is able to connect to your account at Fibernet and is able to connect to your account on the new web hosting company, you are ready to complete the transfer your hosted web site files from Fiber.Net to your your new hosting company.

EMAIL ADDRESSES

If you are using an email address that uses your domain name you will need to duplicate these accounts in your control panel of the new web hosting company. Your designer should be able to assist you with this step. Typically, hosting companies host your website and your email. When you are transferring your website you are also transferring who is handling your email.

IMPORTANT NOTE: TRANSFERRING YOUR WEBSITE TO ANOTHER PROVIDER

Ask your designer to tell you when the transfer is complete. Next, ask them to tell you what your “Name Server addresses” are for the new web site location. Call Fibernet at 800-305-6995. Tell them you want to change the “Name Servers” of your domain name from Fibernet’s servers to the address given to you by your designer.

Once Fibernet makes these changes, within 24hours your website will be live on the new hosting company. At this point everything is OK. You can proceed with Step 3 at anytime. Step 3 is not required until your domain name is up for renewal. Be sure to test your new email accounts.

Step 3 - How Do I Transfer My Domain Name

This step will be a little more time consuming given the circumstance of Heritage moving your accounts to Fibernet. By completing Steps 1 & 2 you bought some time to consider this step. Many companies host their websites with one company while another company holds their domain name. If you were successful in moving your site to another company as discussed in Step 2 you have some time to discuss with your designer if transferring your domain name is necessary.
